In light of the passing of Mattie Stepanek earlier in the year, the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2004 Labor Day Telethon was sure to be a poignant one. The MDA had announced that the telethon would be dedicated to Mattie, and included many touching segments that showed Mattie's very full life. Since we were very eager to do Mattie proud and surpass our previous accomplishments, we looked for ways to ensure that as many folks as possible participated. There were some very creative and entertaining challenges made to encourage donations (See Mike and Tom's Hairy Adventures in the BillyHeadLines Archives). Additionally, Billy himself donated some signed 'memorabillya' that we used to help raise funds. Finally, we coordinated our efforts and combined our donations with those of another fan site, BillyGilmanFans.com, to help extend the participation to more of Billy's online fans. Together, the members of BillyGilmanFans and the BillyHeads worked hard and donated generously to help make 2004's fund-raising efforts the most successful ever. It worked. The donations of 'cash' totalled up to $11,532.95. That odd number combined with money donated directly to the MDA and the 'matching gift' funds from some donors' employers brought the grand total to Fifteen Thousand Dollars!! Not included in that amazing sum are the funds raised by auctioning two autographed leather jackets which Billy donated to the cause. The first sold for $3650 and the second for $2000. The additional money that Billy's items raised brings the tally for the year's efforts to $20,650!!! A total of $17,182.95 was collected directly from fans as part of our combined effort. The goal of "doing Mattie proud" was definitely accomplished.
Here is a list of all those who contributed to the fund-raiser:
